The 'Circus' Brings More Than Just Music

The following italicized article is from www.examiner.com:

The Circus Tour staring Britney Spears was a theatrical performance unlike many other concerts. On Sunday August 30, 2009 the tour was showcased in Philadelphia, PA. The Big Apple Circus was a major contributor to the show that needed over 250 crew members, including 50 of them being dancers, magicians, clowns and acrobats, 60 tons of equipment and 34 trucks to carry the gear. The show most importantly included the one and only Britney Spears. The night at the Wachovia Center briefly included Kristina DeBarge and One Call as the opening acts.

The first singer Kristina DeBarge opened up the show performing four songs from her debut album Exposed. For a 19 year old that is new to the industry, she handled herself very well in front of a large audience on such a large stage. She made sure to perform towards all four sides of the arena during her set. Also onstage with her were four dancers. She was choreographed in the steps she took and the dancers worked well around her. She ended her night performing her first single, “Goodbye.”

The next performance to hit the stage was a boy band that featured members that have previously been involved in the music industry. Chris Moy and Jose Bordonada were formal members of the MTV series “Making Menudo,” and Justin Thorne was a member of NLT. The fourth member of the band is AG Gamlieli. They also performed a very quick set. The four members started singing while sitting on wooden stools, but soon turned to signing and dancing. After both opening performances, which only took 20 minutes, fans were informed by a countdown clock that they were less then 30 minutes away from the start of the Circus.

As the Circus began, it started like no one would have predicted. It did not start with the music of Britney Spears playing, but instead the stage was filled with circus performers from the Big Apple Circus. The first set of performers spun and juggled metal fence pieces and metal piped cubes. Then a trampoline act followed. There were two people on the trampoline, a full sized male, and a female legless performer. Following the trampoline act was a balance beam performance like none other. The beam was bendable, and it acted as a way for the two men on each side to bend down and launch the female performer into the air to while she somersaulted and twisted, only to land back on the spring like beam.

It then became time for the main attraction. Britney Spears was lowered into the Circus by means of a ring she stood in as it came down to the floor from the rafters. She wore a gold sequined outfit and performed the song “Circus,” as her opener. The 2007 MTV VMA's she performed and got criticized for has long been forgotten after seeing the way she moved during the entire show. During the song “Piece of Me” Spears climbed into a caged cart and was pulled around stage by her dancers. While in the cage, she moved in a very sexual and seductive way, much like she did for the rest of the night.

With thousands of eyes watching her, Spears needed to perform a show that everyone would remember. Of course all the theatrical and real circus performances that took place before she hit the stage as well as during her costume changes would leave an image to be remembered forever. But what this night really came down to is what songs Spears would perform and how would the crowd remember her for those numbers.

For most performers that have released six studio albums, most of the songs that they play are hit singles from older albums along with some of the songs from their newly released album. Spears however decided to throw in some older songs that never made it as singles. Some of these songs included “Freakshow,” “Get Naked (I Got a Plan)” and “Ooh Ooh Baby.”

This does not mean Spears forgot her singles, as she included “Toxic,” “Break The Ice” and “If U Seek Amy.” During “If U Seek Amy,” Spears wore silver and black lingerie with a pink shawl. She also grabbed a fake pink hammer as the song came to an end. After all the dancers left the stage but four of them, she bopped each of them on their head knocking them down the holes that were open on the stage.

Speaking of her lingerie, many people also come to see Spears perform to see what outfits she would be dressed in. Some of her sexy outfits included a blue-green genie outfit, a white and black sequined bikini top with black boy shorts, and a silver one piece sequined garment.

Towards the end of the show Spears slipped into a pair of red pants, knee high pair of heeled black boots and a black top the showed her midriff. She performed her first hit single “… Baby One More Time”. At the conclusion of the song she was lowered through the door of the stage floor and columns of smoke shut up from around the outline of the stage.

For her encore presentation, Spears wore a sexy police woman’s uniform and she danced through her final song of the night, “Womanizer.” Before exiting the stage for the night, Britney Spears and her dancers took a final bow from the stage as a way to say thank you.

This was surely a circus and concert that can not be compared to any other. Britney is back and in top form. She dances at the level of skill she had during her albums …Baby One More Time, and Oops!... I Did It Again. And she performed and entertained at the level she had after the albums Britney and In The Zone. Job well done to all those who made this tour come alive and you should all be very proud to be part of something so spectacular.
