Update: Neil Patrick Harris clarifies his Britney Spears remarks, AP then clarifies its story

The following italicized article is from www.ew.com:

In an exclusive statement, Neil Patrick Harris responds to the Associated Press article that suggested he would like Britney Spears banned from the set of his CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. "It seems that yesterday a writer took some quotes of mine and speculated an opinion about their intent. I write to you to set the record straight," the actor says. "Britney did a great job on the show. She really did. In fact, we are all hoping that she returns rather soon to reprise her role as Abby."

Spears guest starred as a lovestruck receptionist on the March 24 episode, which earned the series' highest ratings in the 18-49 demographic in its three seasons on the air. The appearance also garnered remarkably strong reviews for the troubled pop star. In the AP story, however, Harris was quoted as saying, "I'm in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to succeed.... I worry that if they start Will & Grace-ing us too much, that the show will suffer." Now he tells EW.com that he would welcome Spears back — because he has "great faith" in the show's producers and writers. He also says, "My job description is to act, and I should really do just that."

At first, the AP stood by its story. "I respect his right to change his stance," said AP entertainment editor Jesse Washington, "but...Neil Patrick Harris told us unequivocally that he did not believe that Britney should be on the show." But by late Friday, April 11, the AP seemed to have changed its tune. "We're issuing a clarification to our story," Washington said in a statement. "Harris did not say that he opposed a return engagement for Spears, and our lede said that he did."

Harris' full statement here:

"It seems that yesterday a writer took some quotes of mine and speculated an opinion about their intent. I write to you to set the record straight.

"As I have said all along, Britney did a great job on the show. She really did. In fact, we are all hoping that she returns rather soon to reprise her role as Abby. Look, that episode garnered our highest ratings of the season — I would never ignore or disrespect that fact. I am just very protective of our show, and its content. I have a high standard of quality, and hope to maintain it on every level. Television is big business, I understand that. I have great faith in our casting department, as well as [Twentieth Century Fox Television] and CBS, to find the appropriate person for every role on our show. I was remiss in speculating otherwise. My job description is to act, and I should really do just that.

"Britney Spears fits into our make-believe world very well — if she chose to return I can only imagine that Carter [Bays], Craig [Thomas], and the rest of the writers would create a humdinger of a storyline for her. We should be so lucky."

CHP Says Britney's Nobody Special

The following italicized article is from www.tmz.com:

CHP officers claim it wasn't the Brit-wreck that convinced them to perform a field sobriety test after her accident -- it was the timing of Brit's wreck.

At first, it sounded a little suspicious that officers questioned Britney Spears' sobriety -- since the entire planet knows about her stint in rehab -- but we did a check and we're told it was absolutely S.O.P.

According to a CHP rep, there was "no odor, nor any kind of erratic behavior" that could have suggested Britney was under the influence during her 3 car fender bender just after 8 PM Saturday night. After an accident, officers "do a standard check on most drivers, especially during those hours."

So she still can't drive, but at least she's clean!

Crash! Boom! Bang!

Britney Spears was involved in a minor car accident on the 101 freeway in SoCal last night ... and despite the attempt by some media outlets who are trying to turn the incident into a major event (I really believe that calling her fender bender a "three car pile-up" is a bit excessive) this was really just a small accident that really amounts to nothing. Here are a few pics from the scene:

Britney Spears is unhurt after being involved in a highway accident Saturday evening in the Los Angeles area. The pop star was driving her 2008 white Mercedes northbound on the 405 connector to the 101 freeway when the collision occurred at 8:18 p.m., the California Highway Patrol confirmed. According to the accident report, "The collision occurred when the driver of the Mercedes, driving in the #3 lane, in stop and go traffic failed to observe the vehicle directly ahead of her come to a complete stop. She attempted to brake but failed to stop her vehicle prior to colliding into the rear of the Nissan [in front of her]." The Nissan, as a result, collided into another car, which was not damaged. No one was injured, according to the report.

These sorts of things happen on the 101 freeway all the time ... there is constant stop and go traffic and you see these little bumps all the time ... this one just happened to involve Britney Spears. I'm actually quite disgusted by The Sun's reporting of this incident. They quoted a "source" who was allegedly on the scene as saying, "Britney just appeared to lose concentration and drove into the car in front of her." TMZ is reporting that Brit Brit was given a field sobriety report to see if she was driving under the influence of alcohol ... which turned up completely negative. In any event, this whole thing is such a non-issue but it's deffo worth talking about since it involves Britney Spears.

Earlier in the weekend, Britney was spotted having dinner with her agent Justin Trawick (who, if memory serves, was the person instrumental in getting Britney her guest starring spot on How I Met Your Mother) at Sushi House Unico on Friday night, no doubt cooking up their next plan of attack career-wise:
It's too bad she didn't have Justin drive her around last night, she might've avoided her latest overdramatized car accident. I find it very encouraging that the two met up for dinner because that means that she prolly has some new career opportunities in the near future. Could they have been discussing her next guest starring role on TV? I guess time will tell.

Cops to Brit: You Crashed, but Are You Smashed?

The following italicized article is from www.tmz.com:

Brit Brit was the driving force in a minor three car ax Saturday night -- but cops say she was dead sober when it happened.

According to the CHP collision report, the popwreck drove her 2008 Mercedes into the back 2006 Nissan as she drove on the 101freeway in L.A. around 8:18 PM PT. The other driver was a 20-year-old man from the valley -- his friends are gonna love this.

The report claims Brit was caught in stop and go traffic when she "attempted to brake but failed to stop her vehicle." The Nissan was then, "pushed forward into another older model vehicle."

TMZ confirmed that officers on the scene DID perform one field sobriety test on Spears, which turned out negative.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Britney in a Bitty Fender Bender

The following italicized article is from www.eonline.com:

No harm, but a bit of a foul just the same.

Britney Spears was involved in a minor chain-reaction collision Saturday on Los Angeles' 101 Freeway, authorities confirm to E! News.

According to the California Highway Patrol's accident report, at 8:18 p.m., the popster was behind the wheel of her Mercedes-Benz heading east in stop-and-go traffic a few miles beyond the 101-405 interchange when she bumped into the car in front of her.

"She failed to notice that the vehicle in front of her had come to a complete stop," CHP Officer Patrick Kimball said. "She attempted to break but failed to stop her vehicle prior to colliding with a 2006 Nissan."

As a result, the car Spears hit was pushed into another vehicle, the driver of which "did not observe any damages," Kimball said.

No drivers were cited and "nobody was injured," he added.

While the celeb-gossip blogosphere is already afire with rumors that Spears was asked to take a sobriety test, Kimball said that, to his knowledge, no such test was performed and Spears was not asked to report to any law-enforcement station for further information-gathering.

"No information of that type is in the report," Kimball said.

A source tells E! News, however, that Spears' bodyguard, who was in the passenger seat when the accident occurred, afterward drove his trouble-prone charge to a nearby fire station, where she met briefly with officers.

Following the accident, Britney had dinner at Italian hotspot Dominick's in West Hollywood with mom Lynne Spears and Lynne's friend Jackie, and then was back at her Mulholland Drive-adjacent home within the Summit gated community by 11 p.m., the source said.

While Spears has been spotted in recent weeks motoring her own vehicle within the confines of the Summit, the pop princess hasn't been doing too much of her own driving since a court commissioner placed dad Jamie Spears in charge of her general welfare.

Police: Britney Involved in Fender Bender

The following italicized article is from www.ok-magazine.com:

Remember the good old days of Britney Spears driving aimlessly around Southern California, ignoring red lights, making illegal u-turns and abandoning her car on busy streets?

Well, it wasn't that bad on Saturday night, but California Highway Patrol officers have confirmed that the pop princess was indeed involved in an automotive accident in Los Angeles last night.

According to the Associated Press, police say a two-car collision occurred about 8:20 p.m. Saturday on the northbound 405 highway at the 101 freeway, and that Britney was in one of the cars.

The police have not confirmed if Brit-Brit, who rarely drives herself anywhere since coming under the all-seeing eye of her father Jamie Spears, was actually behind the wheel of one of the cars. Regardless, no one was apparently injured in the incident and no citations have been handed out.
