Britney Spears & Ashton Kutcher Among Twitter’s Top 10

The Web is alive – with the sound of Twitter!

Dozens of celebrities have hopped onto the social networking Web site in the last few months, tweeting 140-character messages ranging from what they’re eating to questions for fans. And judging by the hundreds of thousands of people who are following them on the site, their fans are Twittering right back.

According to TwitterCounter.com’s top 100 list, Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher are almost as popular as Barack Obama and CNN’s Breaking News page.

Celebs from all walks of life, from basketball star Shaquille O’Neal to former Vice President Al Gore, are among the site’s most popular users.

As of Saturday, CNN’s Breaking News Twitter page is Twitter’s most-followed feed, with 481,541 followers as of Saturday. U.S. president Barack Obama was close behind with 444,132, while Twitter’s own official feed ranked third with 394,940 followers.

And then there are the celebs.

Britney Spears has 364, 219 followers for her official feed, making her fourth on the list. So far Brit’s tweets, authored by the pop star, her management and those that run her Web site have offered Britney’s latest happenings and news — like the fact that Fergie was at the pop star’s Friday show.

Tireless Twitterer Ashton Kutcher is fifth most popular with 327,009 followers, and usually can be spotted using the site several times a day. He’s followed by the New York Times with 312,319 followers and new “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon – who’s made an aggressive online push as he’s replaced Conan O’Brien on the show — with 305,890.

"They are absolutely, 100 percent not dating," the source tells Us. "He is her agent, and that is it."

E! News reported Wednesday that Spears was secretly stepping out with Trawick, but the insider tells Us, "They have never gone out on a date.

"He has been her agent for four years, and they are very close friends," the source continues.

"He gets on with her family, but there is absolutely categorically nothing romantic going on.

"Jason was on the road with Britney for three of her tour dates, but that is because he is close friends with her brother Bryan, and that's what agents do -- they support their clients," the source goes on. "Any stories of them being together are completely and utterly made up."

Britney Spears must make other pop stars angry.

Beyonce, Pink, Justin … none of them would dare use pre-recorded vocals during their live shows, despite the complex choreography of their performances. Madonna and Janet are guilty of using backing tracks to carry some of vocal weight, but certainly not all of it. Hell, even the Pussycat Dolls sing live.

But Britney? She is, and always has been, about blatant, unapologetic lip-synching. Case in point: at the New York stop of her anticipated comeback tour, Spears used her actual vocal chords only three times – twice to thank the crowd, and once to sing a ballad (though the vocals during that number were questionable, as well). Even the spoken bits in the songs came from a DAT. Somewhere, Ashlee Simpson has a dartboard with Brit's face square in the bull's-eye.

Of course, none of this bothered the 16,000 fans that turned up to cheer the resurrected icon at Nassau Coliseum Wednesday night. Britney merely paid lip service to her songs, but the audience members screamed the words to every hit at the top of their collective lungs – even if it was obvious they were the only ones really singing.

Why does Britney get a pass when so many other pop stars keep it real? Has her audience become more forgiving after watching their heroine publicly wrestle with her personal demons over the last few years? Perhaps, but sympathy alone doesn't fill arenas to the rafters.

The truth is that vocal prowess has never been the fuel that powers the Britney Machine. Singing simply isn't the point. Spears is an entertainer; a put-on-a-show kind of girl. And despite what happens behind the curtain, Britney's Circus tour is indeed quite a show.

Focusing largely on material from her last three albums, Spears' first outing in five years is a dazzling, racy, in-the-round spectacle that's a little Cirque de Soliel, a little Skinemax, but all Britney at its core. Designed to play up her biggest strengths (i.e. her well-honed dance skills) and distract from her shortcomings, the highly choreographed show features an over-the-top array of acrobats, magicians, clowns, and no less 12 dancers on stage at any given time. The scale of the concert is so massive, in fact, it at times threatens to eclipse its star. Still, despite all of the smoke and mirrors, the most alluring aspect of the show remains Britney herself.

Looking more lively (and more fit) than she has in half a decade, Spears donned 12 different costumes as she shimmed and shook her way through a 17-song set that featured some of her biggest hits, including "Piece of Me," "Toxic," "Womanizer," and funky new remixes of "Slave 4 U" and "…Baby One More Time."

After years of studying the playbooks of Madonna and Janet Jackson, Britney has learned a thing or two about showmanship. When not strutting her scantily-clad stuff from one end of the arena to the other, Spears had plenty of other tantalizing ways to keep the crowd captivated. One minute, she was being sawed in half. The next, she was a straddling dancer suspended 20 feet in the air. If she wasn't writhing around in a gilded cage, she was giving a center-stage lap dance to one very lucky audience member.

But entertainment wasn't Britney's only goal. More than anything, she wants this tour to prove to the world that she's stronger than yesterday, and that she's back in control of her own circus. Her assortment of authoritative costumes (Sexy Ringleader! Sexy drill sergeant! Sexy policewoman!) helped to drive the point home, but the biggest evidence of Spears' rebirth was simply the confidence and vigor behind her performance. For the first time in ages, she actually worked for the applause – and, like the Britney we once knew, she seemed to have a great time doing it.

Thanks to her infectious enthusiasm, Spears managed to pull off the biggest magic trick of all – she erased the image of the sad, wayward diva that has been plastered across the tabloids for the last few years. And for many fans, that alone was cause for ovation.

Eighteen months ago Britney Spears took the stage at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards and, it surely seemed, doused her career in lighter fluid and struck a match. In her brief performance she looked fatigued, unhappy and disoriented. With Ms. Spears already in the middle of a hostile run in the tabloids, this was something worse than self-injury; it was a speeding car with no driver. Surely no good ending was possible.

That she might attempt a tour on the scale of the one that arrived at the Nassau Coliseum here on Wednesday night would have appeared laughable and worrying. That she pulled it off was nothing short of a shock.

Even though Ms. Spears is essentially operating under the auspices of her father, Jamie Spears, who last year was granted legal conservatorship over her, she is 27 now, a mother of two and finally in righteous possession of the anger and frustration that have long animated some of her best music, but never her persona.

Not that she was sneering her way through this warp-speed-quick hour-and-a-half performance. This was less a concert — the vocals appeared to be recorded — than a Las Vegas-style revue of intimidating complexity. Throughout, though she spoke little, Ms. Spears appeared radiant and unfettered, often smiling and never uncommitted.

There was efficient, expert use of a huge stage set in the round, featuring about a dozen backup dancers choreographed impressively by Jamie King.

The rigid execution extended to image management as well: Ms. Spears’s handlers denied access to photographers except under the strictest of usage terms.

From the tour’s title — “The Circus Starring Britney Spears” — on down, the night was rife with blunt-force imagery: Ms. Spears locked in a cage and working her way out, Ms. Spears suspended in a picture frame, Ms. Spears as a ringmaster wielding a whip. During many segments of the show she and her dancers wore bondage-inspired outfits reminiscent of early-’90s modes of sexual transgression.

And there was no room for reflection; the past had moved by far too quickly to dwell on it. Ms. Spears performed a version of her first hit, “ ... Baby One More Time,” and, in a video montage before the encore, flashed through scenes and images from her entire career. (Her kiss with Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards received the biggest cheer.) But otherwise there were no references to her first two albums. Any song with even a whiff of naïveté was stricken from the record — no “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” no “Sometimes,” no “From the Bottom of My Broken Heart.”

Instead she leaned heavily on the surprisingly strong “Circus” (Jive), her sixth album, released late last year, and her previous album, “Blackout,” from 2007: songs about empowerment and disempowerment set to frantic production. Rarely varying from script, she resisted deep reading, though midshow she briefly erupted into a military shout. “I don’t know what you’ve been told,” she said. “This mama is in control.” She seemed certain of it.

First Look: Britney Spears, ‘If U Seek Amy’

Earlier this morning, at 11AM ET/8AM PT, Britney.com premiered the new music video for Britney Spears’s third single off her latest album Circus. As you may recall, a few weeks ago we got our first look at photos of Britney on the set of her video for If U Seek Amy and right now we get to see the final product in full. Here are a few screencaps from the video:
This new video isn’t as involved as her previous videos for Circus and Womanizer. While those videos focused on multiple shot angles, routines and extraneous characters (like circus animals, acrobats and womanizers) this video focuses squarely on Britney, or her Amy character. The video starts initially with a faux news report that features a conservative-looking woman seemingly reporting on the “obscene spelling” that is showcased in the new Britney Spears song If U Seek Amy (which is based on a real FOX News report that came out a few weeks ago) and then cuts to a dark hotel-looking room with Britney on a bed with a bunch of people. She sexily dances with folks thruout the “hotel” and then does a quick change midway thru the video and emerges from a “perfect house” as a picture-perfect conservative-looking housewife (complete with husband, kids and apple pie). Simple, to the point.

It seems to me that the point of the video is to suggest that what you see on the outside isn’t necessarily what really exists on the inside. The same conservative-minded folks who are publicly protesting and lambasting “deviant” behavior and actions (ranging from anything like obscene lyrics to racy music videos, for example) are prolly not as squeaky clean cut as they’d prolly have you believe. At the end of the video, when she presents the wholesome apple pie to the press, she seems to be saying “This is what you want me to be so this is what I’m going to give you” knowing full well that on the inside she’s a freak. At least, that is my interpretation. While I am deffo more a fan of the more upbeat songs that feature killer dance routines, I can appreciate music videos with a message. I doubt that Britney is trying to save the world or even make a serious point with this video … it appears that she is having a bit of fun with the folks who like to point fingers and judge others by reminding us that no one is as perfect that they’d like you think they are. So … thoughts? What do y’all think of this vid?

Just a few hours before taking the stage at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Britney Spears seemed nothing like the erotic pop star that she portrays in her new tour. Instead, the real-life mom showed her nurturing side by bringing joy to dozens of ill youngsters at Miami Children’s Hospital on March 7.

The scene brought tears to many of the parents present – and spoke volumes about the new Britney.

“This tour has had a totally unexpected impact on Britney and her own kids, turning them into a real family,” a friend of Britney tells OK!. “At first, Preston and Jayden were set to stay home with dad Kevin Federline, but as the start date came closer, the boys begged their mother not to leave them.”

Initially, Britney struggled with the idea of adding parenting responsibilities to an already grueling performance schedule.

“She worried, ‘Can I handle it?’ ” her pal reveals. “But it’s working out better than anyone could have predicted.”

Britney expanded The Circus convoy with one extra bus, which sons Preston, 3, and Jayden, 2, share with their father, Kevin.

“Even though Britney is working harder than she has in years, she’s also spending more time with the kids than she has in their entire lives,” her friend tells OK!. “Britney is finally a grown-up who is taking being a parent seriously.”

But 27-year-old Britney still loves having fun with the boys! On March 5, she treated her sons to a day at Walt Disney World. “Preston and Jayden were so excited,” a park guest tells OK!. “They wanted to meet Mickey right away.”

And on Wednesday night, Britney got a surprise visit from someone almost as famous as Mickey Mouse — Madonna!

According to Britney's personal site, the Material made a surprise appearance at Brit's show in Long Island, NY. "Britney was thrilled to have her there!" reads a statement on the site.

Britney Spears isn't confining her comeback to the stage. The "Gimme More" purveyor is at work on her personal life, too.

E! News has learned that Spears, 27, has been secretly on dates with her longtime talent agent, Jason Trawick.

Trawick, 37, a William Morris Agency rep, recently joined Spears for the first four shows of her Circus tour, but we have learned that the two recently have grown much closer away from the workplace.

Trawick declined to comment and referred our request to Spears rep, who has given no official comment on any extracurricular relationship. Trawick's WMA assistant would only confirm that Trawick had been traveling with Spears on her Circus tour and is now back in L.A.

A Spears insider, meanwhile, insists that the singer and the agent strictly have a "close professional relationship" and that's it, calling it "ridiculous" to suggest the pair is anything close to "romantic."

But another well-placed source tells E! News that Trawick's talent agency bosses are OK with his tight bond with his client and, in fact, "They joke about it."

Trawick has been Spears' agent for about five years and also represents Hilary Duff, Taylor Swift and Paris Hilton.

Trawick was spotted with Spears and her sons on March 1 in Louisiana, riding around in a golf cart right before she began her tour. The four were wearing sweatshirts, and Trawick was holding Sean Preston while Britney drove, holding Jayden James.

In May 2008, Trawick jetted down to Costa Rica with Spears to Mel Gibson's retreat, sparking romance rumors that were never confirmed. The two were seen smiling and laughing as they boogie-boarded in the surf. Spears wore nothing more than a bikini and rode around on the back of an ATV with her arms firmly planted on Trawick's waist.

They were then photographed together May 23 at Christian Audigier's 50th birthday party at L.A.'s Petersen Automotive Museum.

Trawick has been credited with helping Spears reunite with her parents, manager Larry Rudolph, and landing her comeback role on How I Met Your Mother.

Perhaps most important, Britney's conservator approves.

Says a Spears family confidante: "Jason is one of the few people who Jamie Spears trusts."
