The Britney Spears comeback train just keeps gaining momentum!

On the eve of her 27th birthday, the singer unveiled a huge present for her fans--revealing twenty new North American tour dates for her 2009 world tour to promote her album, Circus.

This is Brit's first major tour in years---and her first live shows since performing a handful of random, critically panned concerts at the House of Blues in 2007. The Pussycat Dolls will open on the new tour, which starts March 3 in New Orleans and ends on April 28 in Rosemont, Illinois.

Brit will also perform two London, U.K. shows in June.

Britney Spears Tops Yahoo Searches

She did it again: Britney Spears was the most popular search term on Yahoo for the fourth year in a row — her seventh time topping the list.

Spears bested World Wrestling Entertainment, Barack Obama, Miley Cyrus and the online game “RuneScape” as the five most-searched terms of 2008 the Web portal and search company announced Monday, a day before the singer released her new album “Circus.”

Jessica Alba, the anime series “Naruto,” Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie and “American Idol” rounded out the top 10 list.

To compile their year-end review, Yahoo editors analyze search queries based on “absolute volume and growth versus previous periods, to see which themes and trends bubble to the surface.”

Users and their search queries remain anonymous.

Spears also continues to be a ratings draw on television, too. The Saturday episode of the British talent show “The X Factor,” which featured an appearance by Spears, attracted 12.6 million viewers, the show’s biggest audience, The Guardian reported Monday.

This will be the wannabe comeback kid's first live dates since those shiteous House of Blues concerts. Her last major tour - the Onyx Hotel - was a handful of years ago.

The Pussycat Dolls will be opening for Spears on the new tour. The first show is March 3rd in New Orleans and the last concert will be April 28th in Rosemont, IL.

MTV Scores With Britney Special

For the record -- Britney Spears' MTV special did pretty good Sunday night.

"Britney: For The Record" averaged 3.7 million total viewers at 10 p.m.

It also pulled in a 3.5 rating in the network's target demo of persons 12-34, tripling the time period average in that demo and all others.

The documentary, part of Spears' career relaunch, provided insight into pop princess' rough last few years and into her paparazzi-filled everyday life.

Inside Britney Spears' Real-Life Circus

On the eve of both her 27th birthday and the release of her highly anticipated new album, Circus, the pop superstar went to a real-life circus in NYC to put the finishing touches on her first live solo performance in over a year.

For Britney's appearance on Tuesday's Good Morning America, the mother of two will perform in a circus ring – complete with an animal cage – alongside performers from the Big Apple Circus.

"It's going to be pretty wild," one eyewitness, who managed to get a sneak peek of the rehearsal tells OK!. "Brit was dancing in the ring with her regular team, while stilt walkers towered over her and the gymnasts were throwing themselves all over the place."

Says the witness, the Brit-Brit that played ringmaster at today's rehearsal is a far cry from the dazed and confused singer that muddled through her now-infamous performance of "Gimme More" at the 2007 Video Music Awards. "She seems to want to show everyone what the new, improved Britney can do!"

Earlier on Monday, the "Womanizer" star spent the morning taking care of business at her uptown hotel, before leading the caravan of photographers and reporters to her rehearsal at the Big Apple Circus.

In fact, this is the second time this week that the paparazzi has crowded outside the Big Apple Circus on Manhattan's Upper West Side. On Thanksgiving, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes took Suri to see the show there as a holiday treat.

Offering An Apology

G-A-Y in London has just issued the following apology for their Britney debacle this past weekend:

"I have been dreading writing today's mail out, I have written this so many times, I started writing this at 5am Sunday morning, deleted it, re-started writing this on Sunday & once again kept on deleting it because everything I wanted to say, didn't come across the way I wanted it to

Whatever I say now, I know that I'm going to get either slated or have people agree with me but most importantly I want to apologize that what should have been an amazing night ended up being one of such a disappointment for so many, including myself and Michael, Stuart & Peter, who I want to give a special mention to. So I am very, very sorry

There are few facts that I would like to correct, because not everything about Saturday has been reported correctly. So first of, Yes, I had approached Britney to make an appearance at G-A-Y, never a performance, it was just for an appearance, I knew she was only in the UK for 24 hours & there would have been no rehearsal time, so my approach was only for an appearance, nothing was ever confirmed, hence the reason I advertised a Britney Party, however at no stage did I ever advertise that Britney would be there.

There was a possibility that Britney would appear but it had to be hush hush, when the story leaked in the Sun, it meant it was going to be unlikely, but still a possibility, so to try & make it still happen, I didn't respond to the Sun article, because it would make it even less likely, plus I couldn't say either way whether she would be there as, the truth is, I didn't know & wasn't going to know to the very last minute, which is how it would happen.

I knew that if Britney was to appear at G-A-Y then it wouldn't be decided until around 11pm or later on Sat night, so to make sure no one entered on Saturday thinking Britney would be there I instructed security to tell everyone individually that she would not be there, so there would be no disappointments.

At 12:30, I got a call saying she was coming, from my discussions with her TM, I thought there was going to be a chance that Britney would come on stage, the stage was cleared & her security was happy the venue was safe, that is fact despite several people saying she wouldn't go on stage because the venue was unsafe. The venue was at capacity, no more, no less with a queue of one in, one out. It's amazing that people can state reasons for her not going on stage when they weren't backstage with her but decide they know better.

When Britney arrived, no one had spoken to her about going on stage, even though I had had discussions with her tour manager & security & therefore she hadn't planned going on stage & wasn't in the right frame of mind to. I did everything to try & persuade her, & she was thinking about it but as people started to move to the front, the front half of the dance floor was getting to busy where as the back half by the bar wasn't because people were surging forward, so that's why I went on stage to say she wasn't coming on, even though she was still considering it. I wanted her to come on stage but once I knew it wasn't going to happen, even after several other announcements people wouldn't believe she wasn't going to come on & wouldn't move, hence it becoming a dangerous situation, we tried to get people to move back but they wouldn't.

I know we have a lot making up to do, I know we have to re-build the confidence in G-A-Y again & it starts now, so once again I can only apologize.

Few people — and even fewer celebrities — ever have a year like the one Britney Spears has had in 2008.

From a nasty custody battle to hospitalizations to handing over the reins of her life to her father, this could easily have been the lowest point in her life. But then again, she's got a hit song, a new album, a reinvigorated relationship with her formerly estranged family — so 2008 hasn't been without its good side.

"The whole year has been a hell of a year for me," the pop superstar admits in the new issue of Glamour. "I didn¹t know exactly where I stood with everyone."

A big turning point for Brit was her triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards in September, one year after almost throwing her career away with a dazed and lazy performance at the ceremony. "When I received the awards and [the audience] stood for me, it showed me how much love is out there," she explains.

"Recording this album has helped take my mind off certain things," says Britney about her new CD, Circus, which will be released on Dec. 2, which also happens to be her 27th birthday. "For me, my music is therapy."

The one-time party girl, who has photographed pantie-less with the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan also says that that's not the real Britney. "I don't like going out," she reveals. "I hate clubs. I hate being around too many people. I love my home and staying in bed and watching Dancing With The Stars or reading a Danielle Steel novel. I'm kind of boring."

With the clock running out on 2008, Brit's mind is on her resolutions for 2009. "I would like to stop worrying so much, because I worry all the time. And to learn how to be happier, just in general. I have to learn to take things not so seriously. And to stop biting my nails!"

Behind the Britney Story: A Conversation With Writer Jenny Eliscu

Rolling Stone contributing editor Jenny Eliscu first interviewed Britney Spears in RS 877, when Spears appeared on her third cover. Here Eliscu talks about the changes she's seen in Britney over the years, and what it was like getting access to the star for her new story, Britney Returns.

When did you first meet Britney?

It was in summer of 2001. She had just moved into a new house in the Hollywood Hills and she was decorating it with her mom. She was dating Justin at the time. We went into her bedroom into the walk-in closet there was a shirt in the closet that was obviously Justin's. It was a cowboy shirt. It was hanging by itself — I looked at it and I remember thinking, "That's Justin's! He must sleep over here!" And she was very down-to-earth and friendly and silly — I was charmed by her immediately. She was easy to be around. She was just in jeans and a T-shirt and her eyeliner was from last night — which always seems to be the case with Britney. We went to the studio together, and she was working with producer B.T. She got in the booth and sang, and it was surprisingly effortless for her.

How would you compare the girl then to the girl now?

What's the most different was the experience. I had interviewed her a handful of times since that first story, and we'd even talked about doing a book together a couple years ago. I mean, she used to send me Christmas cards and thank-you notes and stuff. Which, by the way, is super rare for anyone to do after you've written about them. Given all this background, I was really suprirsed by the restrictions on my access to her. I was like,"'What's the problem here?" That made me immediately uncomfortable. So, to answer your question is tough, because, compared to my previous experiences with her, this one was so much more micro-managed. I saw her several times over the course of September and October, but I was only allowed to speak with her on two of those occasions. My impressions are based on the very limited constraints that were put on us. That said, the first time I saw her on this story, my first impression was that she looked great. She looked like Britney. But there was much more of a sense of "can we get this over with" and her manager had to sit in. It wasn't possible to engage with her in the ways I was used to, both in my past interviews with her and compared to what it's normally like in general to talk in-depth with a subject.

You've heard her quote from the documentary about how she feels like a prisoner. Did you get that vibe from her?

The thing is, when I met with her, I wasn't looking for that. I had started to feel uncomfortable with all the restrictions, like submitting my questions for approval and not being left alone with her. And whenever I asked who was making these rules, I was told it had to do with the conservatorship. Like most people I didn't know much about conservatorships or how they're supposed to work. Of course, the funny coincidence is that the most famous conservatorship in recent years isn't even Britney's: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were being run by a government conservatorship. And we see how brilliantly that turned out. Anyway, I had done some preliminary research into it, but I was not yet aware how hard Britney had tried to fight it initially and why. As my research progressed, it started to become clear to me that this might not be something that should still be in place. Because it is designed, ideally, to protect people who are seriously ill. We're talking about people who are non compus mentis, according to the lawyers I consulted. Or they're in a vegetative state. Or they're just so old that they can't take care of themselves anymore. But Britney? It was making less and less sense as time went on.

So, as I say, it wasn't until after my last meeting with her that I realized how far beyond the scope of my interview this level of control extended into all facets of her life. And so, unfortunately, I wasn't, like, checking to see if she blinked out an S.O.S. code or whatever. But in hindsight, I did have a new understanding of the quote of hers at the end of the story, which is the last thing she said to me, in the context of being interviewed. She was describing this song she wrote about artistic expression and masquerade — pretending to be other people and putting on shows. And she says, "Through this you create your world." The song is about a girl who likes to live in a world of make-believe, and she's got all these people trying to come into her world that she didn't invite in. It's pretty telling. When you think about it, Britney Spears is an artist — a pop artist, in the truest sense — and sometimes artists do crazy things. I'm not sure why Britney isn't allowed to act out in the ways that we normally consider acceptable from artists. And we're guilty too because we created this Britney Spears character and we won't let her change.

What do you think will happen next? Is this conservatorship thing going to be a problem for Britney in the future?

It's a problem for her now. And the commissioner recently granted their request to make it permanent. If something doesn't change — if somebody doesn't contest it — it would theoretically remain in effect until her father dies. So far, Britney has failed in her attempts to hire her own lawyer.

Why do you think the court keeps approving the conservatorship?

One credible theory goes that the conservatorship manages to remain in effect due to political pressure on the courts to keep Britney off the streets. Her reckless behavior definitely was a problem for tax-paying Los Angelenos, who deserve to be able to drive their roads without fear of being run down by a Britney-led paparazzi chase, you know? She was creating mayhem, and it's fair to consider the impact on her neighbors and community. But I also think it's important for conservatorship not to be manipulated into a form of censorship. As Britney herself notes in that documentary, the punishment for her antics ought to fit the crime. At this point, it's like we're punishing her for acting shamlessly. and for being tacky. And this is America! If Britney is famous for acting tacky, we've got no one to blame but ourselves.
