Britney Spears Goes on Trial for Traffic Offense

The following italicized article is from www.people.com:

After more than a year of legal bickering, Britney Spears goes on trial Wednesday in a Van Nuys, Calif., court on a charge of driving without a license.

The pop star, who faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, is not required to attend because it's only a misdemeanor case.

Barring any last-minute legal moves, the trial will begin with jury selection and is expected to last several days.

Spears, 26, opted for the jury trial after rejecting a plea deal of one year's probation and a $150 fine.

"My client will never plead guilty to this charge, which should be reduced to an infraction," said her attorney Michael Flanagan, who twice turned down prosecutors' plea deals. "We'll appeal any conviction."

The charge stems from Spears's fender-bender in August 2007. A hit-and-run charge was eventually dismissed after she compensated the other driver for damages, but the driving-without-a-license charge remained.

Spears had a Louisiana license at the time of the accident, but prosecutors contend she has long made her home in California and therefore was legally required to have California license. She has since gotten one.
