Britney Spears Took Aim At The Media In 'Piece Of Me' Video

The following italicized article is from www.mtv.com:

Britney Spears might not have been at her personal peak when she released Blackout in 2007, but she also wasn't afraid to show the world that she was in on the joke.

On her single "Piece of Me," Britney sings about how every move she makes is reported by the media. And what better place to film a video for the song than in a nightclub with reporters and paparazzi trying to capture Brit's every move?

"On 'Piece of Me,' I really just wanted to put the mirror back onto the whole experience," director Wayne Isham told MTV News about the video's concept, which finds Britney flirting with boys and dancing around the club. "You can see that she had that kind of confidence. And, literally, every take became a more and more confident take, so that she could have fun with what was going on. Not being over-the-top sarcastic, but ... having a laugh at everything that was going on around her, with confidence."

At the time, Britney had become a tabloid staple. And, even when she was trying to get her career back on track, it seems the paparazzi were there to mess with any comeback plans. "She was late," Isham recalled. "People made a big thing about it, [but] how could she not be late, when you have 50, 65, 75 people running down the street chasing her car? That was a long day for the crew. It was literally a 20-hour day for the crew. She was there for the last six hours of it. She got there late, showed up and just kicked ass."

Isham encouraged the pop star to get loose for the video and (literally) let her hair down.
"The very last dance of the piece, she had her hair up, and I go, 'Can you just do one for me with your hair down?' She dropped her hair down," Isham recalled. "You'll see we intercut with her hair up and her hair down. That was the last piece. She just rocked it from her heart. She choreographed that last dance at the very end. She did that on her own and said, 'Let's go for it.'"

The video, which earned the singer three VMAs in 2008, would prove that no matter what was happening in her life, she could bring it. "When she goes for it, she goes for it," Isham said. "You know, it's about the story line, it's about her dance, it's about her appearance," he said. "I just love that she's one of the few that are still left that step up to what music videos are about."

Britney Gets Nailed With Seven MTV VMA Nominations

The following italicized article is from www.eonline.com:

Britney Spears has done it again.

I can exclusively reveal that our favorite comeback kid has been nominated for not one, not two, not three…well, seven MTV Video Music Awards.

Last year, the pop princess made a brilliant return to the VMA stage when she took home three Moon Man trophies for "Piece of Me."

And while we hate to remember this...

Could ya believe it was only two years ago that Spears solidified her trainwreck status at the VMAs in Las Vegas with her disastrous performance of "Gimme More" in front of an audience that included Megan Fox?

This year's awards will be handed out and broadcast live on MTV from New York's Radio City Music Hall Sept. 13. Russell Brand returns as host.

No word yet if Brit will be added to this year's performance roster, which already includes Taylor Swift, Pink, Green Day and Muse. Additional nominees and performers are expected to be announced later today.

Britney Spears' Comeback -- It's The Real Deal

The following italicized article is from www.insidebayarea.com:

There have been points over the last five years when the chances of Britney Spears mounting a successful comeback seemed about as likely as George W. Bush being elected mayor of Berkeley.

At other moments, the odds looked even worse.

The former teen dream had spent the last five years becoming the ultimate tabloid queen. Her sad tale unfolded before us at the supermarket checkout lanes, as headlines screamed out the latest misadventures of the former "Mickey Mouse Club" sweetheart; with each paparazzi payday it seemed like Spears was taking another step toward the point of no return.

Connecting with the public

Yet a funny thing happened on the way to the land of pop culture has-beens: Spears somehow managed to turn things around, at least professionally. Her new album, "Circus" debuted at No. 1. Her concert tour is doing strong business. She's turning out to be one of 2009's most convincing comebacks.

How did this happen when things, not so long ago, seemed so bleak? Some point to the surprisingly good quality of her 2007 album "Blackout," which, ironically, was a commercial failure. But an even larger element seems to be that she was able to turn all her messy trials and tribulations into a legitimate connection with the public. We really wanted her to turn things around

As fans prepare for Spears' three Northern California concerts — Saturday at Arco Arena in Sacramento, April 12 at HP Pavilion in San Jose and April 22 at Oracle Arena in Oakland — it seems apropos to look back at Spears' recent rollercoaster ride of a career and hopefully shed some light on why Britney has succeeded in an area where so many others have failed.

'Til death do us part'

During the first half of her career, Spears seemingly could do no wrong. She rose to stardom with the 1998 single —...Baby One more Time" and released hit album after hit album, becoming the first female performer to have four consecutive discs debut atop the charts. She did all this while managing to maintain a highly marketable public image that, for the most part, successfully married teen idol and sex kitten. She also had a storybook romance with another emerging Mouse Club alum, Justin Timberlake. It seemed the young princess of pop would someday marry her equally attractive prince in a wedding that would be the grandest since Prince Charles wed Diana.

Instead, they broke up. And if one had to nail down a date for when it all began to unravel for Spears, one might point to Jan. 3, 2004, the day she surprised the world by marrying childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander at a Las Vegas chapel. The fact that the marriage only lasted 55 hours before being annulled gave the impression that the starlet didn't have a firm grasp on her personal life.

From there, things began to snowball. She married a second time, to little-known dancer Kevin Federline, who abandoned his girlfriend and their two out-of-wedlock children to take up with Britney. Spears had two children with K-Fed, did things that made mothers-at-large cringe, then divorced her second husband and fought for custody of their children.

Living la vida loco

Spears become a constant fixture on the celeb night life scene, and revealing photos of her (such as that infamous panty-less shot), once considered the Holy Grail for Web-browsing peeping Toms, became as ubiquitous on the Internet as ads to refinance your home.

She shaved her head, for no apparent reason, and was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation, for very apparent reasons. There was talk of drug use, and her career was stalling: Her fifth disc, 2007's "Blackout," became her first not to top the Billboard album charts.

As late as February 2008, Rolling Stone magazine ran a cover story titled "The Tragedy of Britney Spears," which summed up the public perception of the fallen star. The whole thing was like some grandiose Greek tragedy, starring a former Mouseketeer from Mississippi, and oddly enough people couldn't get enough of it. Or, perhaps, the appeal wasn't so weird after all.

What Spears had succeeded in doing, with all her personal failures, was to create a celebrity image that felt far more "real" than nearly anything the public had ever seen (with a downfall that rivaled Lindsay Lohan's for media access). It's hard for regular folks to truly identify with a megastar who's on top of the world and selling millions of albums, but it's not hard to connect with one going through breakups, child custody battles and financial woes. Spears was unable to do something that she was never able to do before 2004: She made us feel like she was one of us.

Now, seemingly every celebrity is attempting to accomplish something similar. Countless pop culture icons, who once nurtured the image of being different from the public at-large, are going out of their way to come across like Average Joes and Janes. They use their blogs and Twitter to keep fans up to date on everything from what they had for breakfast to how their relationships are going. Think John Mayer and Pete Wentz. None of them, however, have consistently given us more of interest, without seemingly trying, than Britney.

The public might be fascinated with a "crash and burn." But people love a comeback. Spears certainly qualified for the former, and she showed enough resilience to give watchers hope that she might also make it to the latter.

'Circus' comes to town

By Britney standards, "Blackout" was a commercial disappointment, though many critics (including this one) thought it was her best record to date. And it plays a big role in Britney's comeback. It propelled Spears to a big night at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 7, 2008. The CD's key single, "Piece of Me," would garner trophies for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. Suddenly, Britney was getting good press.

Spears' record label, Jive, capitalized by quickly releasing the first single from her forthcoming sixth CD to radio. The track, a contagious dance ditty called "Womanizer," shot to the top of the charts by mid-October and — surprise, surprise — Britney found herself with one of the biggest hits of her career.

When the album "Circus" was released at the end of November, it debuted at No. 1. It's one thing to persuade a fan to drop $15 on a CD (or download), but it's quite another to get people to spend hundreds of dollars on concert tickets. Spears proved up to that challenge as well.

The singer's road show is turning out to be one of the year's top tickets. That's definitely the story in Northern California, where the tour — the singer's first major outing in five years —is expected to see nothing but full houses during its three stops.

"Anytime an artist is away from the scene for awhile, you have to wonder if their audience will still be around," says Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of the concert industry trade publication Pollstar. "Obviously, Britney has a legitimate fan base that still wants to see her perform live."

That fan base is also willing to pay top dollar for the opportunity. Tickets for her local concerts run as high as $750. That's a lot of dough to drop in these tough economic times, especially for an artist who has seemingly given her fans every reason in the world to stop caring.

Yet, if anything, they seem to care even more than ever.

"I want my kids to see her succeed," says Castro Valley resident Arlene Chaves, who is spending some $2,000 to take her family to the Oakland concert. "I'm excited, personally, to see the show, because I really feel bad for her. I feel bad for what she's been through, and it makes me feel good to see her come back."

Britney Spears Feels the Need For Speed

The following italicized article is from www.celebrity-gossip.net:

Sure, she has a bevy of fine high-performance vehicles at her disposal, but yesterday afternoon (October 5), that wasn’t enough for Britney Spears.

The “Piece of Me” singer headed over to Dromo 1: The Real Racing Experience in Anaheim, California to light up the go-karting track with her race driving skills.

Brit looked excited as she donned a racing mask and helmet before heading out on the 1000 foot-long track, taking several laps as a camera crew looked on.

The footage is said be for Spears’ upcoming behind-the-scenes DVD, set to release at the same time as her new album Circus on December 2nd.

Britney Spears: Shopping Spree, Interrupted

The following italicized article is from www.celebrity-gossip.net:

Overwhelmed by paparazzi following her every move, Britney Spears was spotted paying a visit to Fragment Jewelry store in Soho on Tuesday (September 30).

After pulling up in her chauffeured SUV, the “Gimme More” singer ended up deciding against wading through the crowd of gathered spectators - getting back in the car and pulling away before stepping foot in the NYC shop.

For the past few days, Miss Spears has been calling the Big Apple home, as she continues to plug her brand new single, “Womanizer”.

In a recent interview during the promotional trip, Brit chatted about her massive MTV Video Music Awards comeback earlier this month thanks to her video for “Piece of Me.”

She told press, “It’s a cool video, but I think by far I’ve done videos that are way better, so I was really shocked that it got the award. It was just inspiring, though, because now, going forward with the videos that I’m doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens.”

Britney Spears Says She Plans To Tour In 2009

The following italicized article is from www.mtv.com:

Britney Spears stopped by New York radio station Z100 Monday morning (September 29) to talk about her new single, "Womanizer," which made its debut on the station Friday, and surprised listeners by saying she's planning to tour next year.

"['Womanizer' is] basically saying, 'We know what you're up to.' It's about guys cheating on girls," she said. "It's a girl anthem. That's why I like it. So hopefully the fans will see it that way too!"

She also said she's completed work on her forthcoming LP, Circus (which is slated for release on her 27th birthday, December 2), on which the single appears. "Well, actually ... I cut Circus like two weeks ago. I've been working on this album for, like, six months now."

Spears said was stunned when she won three Moonmen earlier this month at the VMAs, in part because she feels she's done better videos. "It's a cool video, but I think by far I've done videos that are way better, so I was really shocked that it got the award," she said.

"It was just inspiring, though," she continued, "because now, going forward with the videos that I'm doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens."

Surprisingly, the singer also said that she plans to tour in 2009. "Oh, definitely next year," she said when asked about touring possibilities. "Probably around the world." Last year, Spears, under the name M+M's, did a small club tour that found her lip-synching and wearing a black wig during a brief set.

Last week, Spears was seen around Los Angeles filming the video for "Womanizer." In the clip, Britney sports a vampy look, clad in a short black wig and red lipstick, and playing a waitress. The clip was directed by Joseph Khan, who previously helmed her clips for "Stronger" and "Toxic." Sources told UsMagazine.com that the video features "erotic" choreography.

Britney Spears is Serendipity Sweet

The following italicized article is from www.justjared.com:

Britney Spears grabs dinner and dessert at one of her favorite old New York hangouts on Monday night, the Upper East Side restaurant Serendipity 3.

Earlier today, the 26-year-old pop princess talked about winning three Moonmen at MTV’s Video Music Awards, including video of the year for “Piece of Me”.

“It’s a cool video, but I think by far I’ve done videos that are way better, so I was really shocked that it got the award,” she said. “It was just inspiring, though, because now, going forward with the videos that I’m doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens.”

Britney Spears Files Appeals In Driving Case

The following italicized article is from www.usatoday.com:

Britney Spears' attorney has asked a judge to delay the singer's upcoming trial on a misdemeanor charge for driving without a valid license.

Attorney J. Michael Flanagan filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday seeking a stay in the criminal case. Flanagan also wants an appellate judge to order the judge overseeing the case to grant Spears' motion to dismiss.

Flanagan has twice requested a dismissal of the case, saying that Spears should be allowed to pay a $10 fine and not face a criminal trial.

The 26-year-old singer is scheduled to go on trial in October on a single misdemeanor charge that she did not have a valid California license when she hit a parked car in August 2007 and left the scene.

Flanagan also argues in Monday's filings that Spears is unable to meaningfully participate in her defense because of her conservatorship. Since February, her father has controlled the singer's personal and financial affairs.

Also Monday, the pop star told a New York radio station that her clip Piece of Me leaves room for improvement — despite winning three MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month.

"It's a cool video, but I think by far I've done videos that are way better," the singer said in an interview with top 40 radio station Z100. "So I was really shocked that ... it got the award."

Spears called her triple victory "inspiring, though, because now going forward with the videos that I'm doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens."

Spears, whose new album Circus drops Dec. 2, plans a possible world tour next year.

Britney Goes Live on the Radio

The following italicized article is from www.ok-magazine.com:

Britney Spears has descended upon NYC and is already hitting all the big stops, including a visit to radio station Z100 to chat live on the air about her new album, Circus.

"I've been working on this album for six months or so," she tells Z100's JJ.

The Britster seemed calm, cool and collected wearing a sweater and sunglesses as she added her thoughts on her new song, "Womanizer," which dropped last week.

"It's a really cool song," she says of the single. "I like the fact that it's so empowering for girls, because it's basically saying, 'We know what you're up to.' It's about guys cheating on other girls and stuff and it's kind of like a girl anthem."

Britney says she was suprised that for all the times she's been nominated, that she finally won a VMA for her "Piece of Me" video.

"It's a cool video, but I think by far, that I've done videos that are way better, so I was really shocked that I got the award." But this year's success snagging three Moonmen could be just the start for Britney, who says she's excited for the future of her videos.

"It was just inspiring though, because now going forward with the videos I'm doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens."

The comeback queen arrived in the Big Apple yesterday, and she's set to take in the sights and eat her favorite NYC treat – pizza.

"I miss it here so much, I love it!" she gushes about the city. "It's kind of bittersweet coming here because I used to live here for two years, so when I come back it's like, man, I wish I had my apartment here still."

Brit also revealed some exciting news for next year – she'll be going on tour next year, "probably around the world."

Britney Spears Announces A New World Tour

Earlier today we saw pics of Britney Spears making her arrival in NYC late last night and I surmised that she was in town to do some promo work for her new single Womanizer … and I was right. Early this morning, Britney gave an on-air interview to radio station Z100’s DJ Elvis Duran and announced that not only is her new album Circus at the near completion stage but that she will “definitely” be doing a world tour next year!!!

Click HERE to hear the interview in its entirety but essentially Brit reveals that she just “recut” and mastered some tracks to put the finishing touches on Circus, that she was surprised that she won VMAs this year since she believes she has made better videos in her career and, yes, she is promising a world tour “next year” sometime. OMG … awesome news!!! Additionally, Britney talks about what she misses most about NYC — the pizza. Gurl, I hear that. THIS interview is a must-listen. She sounds great and totally back to her cute, normal self. Woot! I say, Woot!

Britney Spears: From LA to NYC

The following italicized article is from www.celebrity-gossip.net:

With her new single “Womanizer” bouncing around the Internet, and a comeback album only a few months from release, Britney Spears has her promotional work cut out for her.

And earlier today (September 28), the “Piece of Me” hottie was spotted arriving at LAX International Airport to catch a transcontinental flight to New York City.

Miss Spears was showing some major roots as she passed the paparazzi, with help from two bodyguards and an assistant, sporting a blue and white striped scoopneck top teamed with a pair of distressed jeans and oversized shades.

And it seems not even Britney is immune to the abysmal housing market these days - according to reports, she even posed in the listing catalog for her $7.9 million mansion in hopes that it would help her sell the house quickly!

Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” Hits The Air

The following italicized article is from www.reuters.com:

Britney Spears is making her comeback — again. First step: release a catchy single. And so, on Friday Britney’s song “Womanizer” finally hit airwaves, four days after its scheduled release and a week after a snippet was leaked.

The song is an upbeat if slightly repetitive electropop number lasting about 3:40. It comes off Spears’ album “Circus,” which is set to be released on her 27th birthday on Dec. 2. The song was produced by The Outsyders, a group based in Atlanta.

It has lyrics that include: “You say I’m crazy/ I got your crazy/You’re nothing but a womanizer” In the song’s chorus, Britney sings, “Boy, don’t try to front/I-I know just-just what you are/Womanizer, you’re a womanizer, baby.”

It remains to be seen what Britney’s fans think of the song, but it’s definitely catchy. In a snap judgment, the Los Angeles Times music blog Soundboard reached the conclusion that “Britney is back. She actually seems to be awake this time.”

Last year in late August, Britney released a song, “Gimme More,” which was also billed as a “comeback” tunes after months of Britney finding herself making headlines for erratic behavior. At that time, she was embroiled in a bitter custody battle over her two sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

She sang “Gimme More” at the MTV Video Music Awards in September ‘07, but was panned by fans and critics. By January of this year, she found herself in a Los Angeles-area hospital under psychiatric evaluation.

But since February, after her father and lawyers took control of her affairs, Britney has seemed to be on the mend. In fact, at this year’s MTV VMAs, Britney won three awards for her song, “Piece of Me.”

So one wonders: could this “comeback” be the real deal.

On her way to a waiting SUV, Brit was heavily shielded from the paparazzi by a bevy of bodyguards in an effort to keep her activities on the down-low.

And according to a recent report, the “Piece of Me” diva may be heading across the pond to perform on the UK hit show X Factor.

Simon Cowell told press, “I think Britney Spears is going to perform. We didn’t get her. She’s got a record coming out. We have the number one show in England. It’s the best show for her to perform on.”

He continued, “We’re absolutely thrilled to have her. She’s a hugely talented person… She’s the number one booking in the world at the moment for a show.”

Britney Spears Due to Release Album in December

The following italicized article is from www.abcnews.com:

Britney Spears' second comeback is in full swing: She's due to release a new album in December, on her 27th birthday.

"Circus" is set for release Dec. 2, a little over a year after she released last November's "Blackout," which was perhaps her most critically acclaimed CD, but came during her infamous year of erratic behavior, rehab, custody battles and at least one hospitalization. She barely promoted it, and the album — though it was certified platinum — was one of her least successful.

But these days, Spears has been in the spotlight for all the right reasons. She won three MTV Video Music Awards for her clip "Piece of Me" and appeared on the Sept. 7 awards show looking fit and stunning, a reversal of her disheveled, widely panned appearance in 2007. She also drew praise for her guest appearances on CBS' "How I Met Your Mother."

Spears' life seems to have rebounded after her father, James Spears, went to court and took control of her personal and professional life as her conservator. She also resolved her custody battle with former husband Kevin Federline, with Federline retaining custody of their two young sons and Spears receiving visitation rights.

Among the producers on Spears' new CD are Nate "Danja" Hills and Max Martin, who produced some of her biggest hits, including her first, "Baby One More Time." The first single, "Womanizer," will be released to radio Sept. 22, her record label, Jive/Zomba, announced Monday

Britney to Release New Album on Her Birthday

The following italicized article is from www.people.com:

Britney Spears has arranged a wonderful birthday present for herself: her sixth studio album, Circus, due for release Dec. 2 – the day she turns 27, her label announced Monday.

Coming so soon after her triple victory – for video of the year, best female video and best pop video for "Piece of Me" – at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sept. 7, Circus follows up her well-received 2007 album Blackout and continues the upward spiral the sometimes-troubled pop star has been experiencing.

The Outsyders, described by Spears's label, Jive records, as an up-and-coming Atlanta production team, have produced the first single from the album, "Womanizer," which will drop Sept. 22.

Other producers and writers with a hand in the album, according to Jive, include Dr. Luke (writer-producer of the title track, "Circus"), Danja, Max Martin, Bloodshy & Avant and Guy Sigsworth – who's collaborated with such other artists as Madonna, Alanis Morissette and Bjork.

Overtakes Paris's Record

In all, Spears has sold more than 62 million albums internationally, including 1999's Baby One More Time, 2000's Oops! … I Did It Again, 2001' Britney, 2003's In The Zone and the previously mentioned Blackout. Her sales records include eight No. 1 worldwide singles and four consecutive No. 1 albums.

Also on Monday, Guinness World Records revealed another accolade for Spears: she has replaced Paris Hilton as the Most Searched Person on the Internet in 2007.
