Mel Gibson Tried To Set Britney Spears Up With One Of His Rehabbed Sons

Mel Gibson has twin sons who turn 26 this year, Edward and Christian, who both have stints in rehab. Ed was out of rehab late last year for an alcohol and cocaine addiction, and Christian got a DUI in 2006 and checked into rehab in late January of this year. Mel, who has also has a well publicized DUI under his belt, has recently befriended pop singer Britney Spears, 26. Britney has spent time at Mel’s estate in Costa Rica and has been seen out to dinner with him and his family.

While some speculated that Mel wanted to help Britney with her personal problems, and others wondered if he was trying to convert her to his unique brand of Catholicism, Mel may have had another motivation for spending time with Britney. The National Enquirer reports that Mel tried to set Britney up with the less messed-up twin her age, Edward, but that Britney wasn’t having that. Mel’s son Edward is working his recovery program and the Enquirer says Mel believed he would be a good influence on her.

[Mel Gibson] believed his son Edward - who was in rehab last year for cocaine and alcohol addition - had turned his life around and could help Britney do the same, an insider told The Enquirer.

“Mel felt Ed would be a great influence on Brit, and if the relationship turned to romance, all the better,” said the insider.

So Gibson arranged a meeting between the pair at Britney’s home in the Hollywood Hills last March, said the source.

“He sincerely believed that his son could help Britney stay on the straight and narrow and that they might hit it off as a couple as well,” the insider explained.

But Britney, 26, gave the cold shoulder to Mel and Edward…

“She hid from them most of the night,” revealed the insider. “Mel and his son spent most of the evening talking to her bodyguards.”

There must have been no hard feelings between Britney and Mel after she tried to avoid the set up with one of his sons. She was seen at his Costa Rican getaway in mid-May. Britney also brought along a man with whom she’s been romantically linked in the past, agent Jason Trawick. Maybe Britney and Jason were already dating at that point and she wasn’t open to meeting Mel’s son or maybe she just wasn’t interested in the guy. Can you imagine thinking it’s a good idea to set up Britney Spears with a member of your family, though? At that point it had only been two months since she had that big melt down and was hospitalized.

In related news, OK! Magazine reports that Britney and Kevin had a “secret meeting” with their lawyers over the custody of their two boys. It is thought they are working to avoid having to go to trial to hash out custody issues. The talks were said to be unsuccessful, though, with neither of them willing to compromise. Britney went back home and then had a massage at the Ritz Carlton.

The Two Stogies

Britney Spears and Mel Gibson met up for one of their strange but fairly regular "dates" last night at the uberexclusive, members-only Havana Club in Beverly Hills, CA. It is believed that the couple are engaged in on-going guidance and business sessions (it was discovered that the pair have been meeting regularly back in March and last month, Britney flew down to Costa Rica to vacay with Mel on his estate) but it's very unclear as to what sorts of guidance (spiritual?) or business (a possible movie together?) items they discuss. Here are a couple pics of our dear Britney as she made her way into the Havana Club last night:
For more than two-and-a-half hours, the singer, 26, and the actor-filmmaker, 52, met in what was confirmed to PEOPLE as a more of an ongoing guidance session than a business pow-wow. For their rendezvous at the members-only Havana Club, both showed up separately shortly before 7 p.m., well into the third game of the NBA finals between the L.A. Lakers and the Boston Celtics, which was playing at the bar. As for the smoking and watering hole itself, habitués include Ben Affleck, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Danny DeVito. When Spears arrived, her bodyguard drove a Jeep Commander into the underground parking garage, and she exited with her blonde hair up and pulled back by a white headband. Also with Spears were her assistant Brett and a bodyguard. "She looked pretty in her new Capri jeans a blue blouse, white shoes and a brown bag," says a photographer. Earlier in the day, Spears was seen shopping at the Lisa Kline boutique in Beverly Hills, where she purchased the new jeans and tried on several necklaces. "Britney looked like a doll with bright red lipstick," added the photog, who described her as "very quiet" and "with a serious look on her face as she walked in to the Havana Club." By contrast, an upbeat Gibson left his silver Lexus with the valet and walked in holding what was described as a "man-purse" up to his face and a look of "okay, you got me" as paparazzi snapped his picture. Around 9:30, Spears left the club for home, while Gibson hung around until about 11.

Mel Gibson completely lost all my respect once his anti-Semetic views came to light after his DUI arrest in 2006 (at the time, I was unaware of his numerous homophobic remarks otherwise he would've lost my respect years ago) but I can appreciate that he is taking an active part in Britney's rehabilitation. While he is not someone I would want life coaching anyone I care about (or even remotely know), I'm glad that Britney Spears can, at least, get something positive from him. As I've said many times, she has been working very hard to get her life in order and I'm totally cool with her achieving that goal as best she can -- I just hope he isn't doing more harm than good ... and I'd love it if she'd kick that nasty and deadly smoking habit but, I'll take what I can get.

Earlier this week we saw the first pics of Britney Spears returning home to SoCal after a quick trip to Costa Rica with her father Papa Jamie Spears and (oddly enough) Mel Gibson ... today, we get the first pics of Britney's reunion with her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James (who she made a beeline for upon arrival back in LA) early Tuesday ... part of which she spent curled up with a good book -- Jack Canfield's Key to Living the Law of Attraction: A Simple Guide to Creating the Life of Your Dreams.

Personally, I am not a fan of self-help books but I can absolutely understand how they may prove beneficial for some readers. If these are the sorts of books that have helped Britney regain control of her life in such a way that she is, once-again, productive and able to interact with her family, friends and children in a successful way then I am all for them! These sorts of photos are such a far cry from the tragic pics we were subjected to all last year. I absolutely love the image of Britney holding her children. I also love the image of Britney reading a book ... any book. With reports that Britney is in talks to stage a huge comeback concert in Las Vegas, it make sense that she would try to ground herself beforehand to ensure that she may be successful. She can do it ... she is deffo on the right path for making the comeback of the century.

Isn't it great that we don't ever have to think about those lowlifes anymore? I wonder what they're up to these days and who they're leeching off of now. Actually, I don't really care, to tell the truth. It is my sincere hope that I never have to utter the names of these two ever again.

Welcome Back

Britney Spears's much-deserved vacay in Costa Rica has come to an end ... Miss Brit Brit returned to the SoCal area last night and is already back home again. Here are a couple of screencaps from a Hollywood.tv video of Brit's arrival back in town:
From the looks of the photos that came out of Costa Rica this weekend, Britney really had herself a good ol' time with her family and friends. Not once did we see her with Mel Gibson (who hosted the Britney Bunch at his Cosat Rican compound) but I understand that he was available to "counsel" our dear Britney in between all the fun. I'm not a Mel Gibson fan -- by any means -- nor am I a fan of his beliefs but I can appreciate that he has reached out to help Britney get her life in order and can be commended on that front. As long as Britney continues to heal her life, I can be happy with how she goes about with that healing. I imagine Britney is anxious to spend time with her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, which might account for her return to LA. Welcome back, Britney ... we've missed you :)

Gibson — Spears' former Malibu neighbor who has helped people with sobriety issues — hosted the Spears clan at his $25.8 million, 402-acre ranch on the Pacific coast since last week.

During the vacation, Spears went body surfing. On Saturday, she was photographed zipping around the beach on an ATV, snapping shots of her dad relaxing in a lounge chair.

But all good things must come to an end. Brit has to focus now on her on-going custody case with ex Kevin Federline. The two are scheduled to meet face-to-face in a private conference this week to hammer out the logistics of their custody agreement.

Commissioner Gordon has said that if the two can't come to an agreement, he will set a trial date for sometime in August or September.
