Gibson announced last week that he and Robyn — his wife of almost 28 years — had filed for divorce. She’ll likely get 50% of his $900 million fortune.

Mel Gibson: Spears Dad Pulled Her Through Breakdown

The 'Braveheart' actor phoned the pop star to offer her advice while she was struggling through her recent problems.

He said: "She's a nice kid. She was just going through a rough patch. You see kids that you know in the industry... I just felt like this poor kid she's lining up to be stoned. I just thought, 'I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her', so I just called her and she's doing great now."

Britney's public meltdown saw her shave her head in February 2007 and culminated in her being hospitalised in January 2008 and losing custody of her two sons Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two.

She has since got her career and life back on track and is to embark on her new 33-date tour 'Circus' on March 3.

Despite his friendship with Britney, Mel - who invited the 27-year-old star to holiday with his family in Costa Rica last March - does not take any credit for helping the 'Womanizer' singer out of her troubled spell.

He told US TV talk show host Jimmy Kimmel: "It's got nothing to do with me. She pulled herself out of this, and her dad - he's the real hero."

The 53-year-old Hollywood actor also revealed his regret at not helping actor Heath Ledger before his tragic death in January last year from an accidental drug overdose.

He said: "I should have called him years before. I didn't really know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don't believe it was just an accident. Maybe, I could have called him. When you see sort of an impending tragedy that might go wrong, it just felt like I should do something about it."

Heath won the best supporting actor Oscar last night (22.02.09) for his role in 'The Dark Knight' - which he was working on at the time of his death.

Britney's Dad to Rule the Roost Through '08?

Sources tell E! News that the popster's conservatorship likely won't be dissolved until the end of this year, despite rumors that the 26-year-old could regain control over her estate as soon as tomorrow, following a hearing on various issues pertaining to the arrangement.

Instead, attorneys for Jamie Spears are planning to ask Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz, who's been presiding over the matter since the conservatorship was instated Feb. 1, to extend the order until the fall, according to a source familiar with the situation.

But while that sounds as if it could be grounds for more legal wrangling on Britney's part, it's unlikely that the recuperating songstress is going to fight what appears to be working—at least in terms of Britney being more of a virulent attention-getter as opposed to a prayer-inspiring basket case.

Following Britney's second forced hospitalization in January, Jamie and attorney Andrew Wallet were appointed temporary coconservators of the singer's estate. Her dad also got a say as to who she came into contact with and when, as well as a $2,500 weekly allowance so that he could focus full-time on his oldest little girl.

Since Jamie took the reins of his daughter's finances, medical care and overall welfare, she's slowly rebuilt her relationship with her toddler sons, received sage wisdom from Mel Gibson, guest-starred twice on How I Met Your Mother, shot a video for Madonna's upcoming concert tour and, ahem, gotten the closest she's been to her prebaby bod since…well, since before she had her babies.

Britney's legal camp says that she's waiting until the conservatorship has ended to petition for joint custody of Sean Preston and Jayden James, who will be 3 and 2 in September, respectively. But last week, in handing sole custody over to ex-hubby Kevin Federline, a court granted her more time with the boys each week, as well as an extra overnight visit.

And, with no help from her dad, the "Toxic" blonde's "Piece of Me" scored a nomination for Best Female Video at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, which takes place Sept. 7 in Hollywood.

Also to be dealt with Thursday—the Spears' family's temporary restraining order against former Britney bud Sam Lutfi, who Jamie and Lynne Spears accused of making a variety of manipulative moves while their daughter was emotionally and mentally vulnerable.

We hear that Jamie's camp won't move to make the order permanent—a motion Lutfi had been geared up to fight—and will just let the bad blood evaporate. Britney would still theoretically be barred from seeing Lutfi anyway because of Jamie's continued oversight of who she spends her time with.

As for acting, she's shopping for a supporting role in a romantic comedy to follow up her well-received cameo on CBS' "How I Met Your Mother," the source said. "These are baby steps. She's taking every opportunity to see her kids, and the last thing she'll do is tour for three months or take the lead in a feature and be away from them again," the source said. "Maybe she'll go out on tour after the new year, but something short."

Last month a judge reinstated Britney's overnight visits with Jayden James, 1, and Sean Preston, 2, after she patched things up with divorce lawyer Laura Wasser and made a "businesslike" court appearance opposite ex-husband Kevin Federline.

"The overnight visits are great positive reinforcement for her. She almost has the equivalent of one-third custody back, and being able to care for them is enormously helpful to her progress," another source close to the singer said.

A custody trial is set for next month, and Britney remains under a court-ordered conservatorship run by dad, Jamie Spears, at least until July 31.

It was Jamie and Britney's once-estranged mom, Lynne, who swooped in last January, won a restraining order against mock manager Sam Lutfi and brought Larry Rudolph, who discovered Britney at 13 and built her career, back into the fold.

Now the paparazzi who snapped the minutiae of her meltdowns are filing photos of Britney hitting the gym, working on her sixth album or vacationing with fellow rehabber Mel Gibson, another client of her powerhouse criminal lawyer Blair Berk.

"She's a true professional in the studio. She's very focused, and she stays as long as it takes to get the job done," said songwriter James (Jim Beanz) Washington, who's collaborating with Britney and mega-producer Nate (Danjahandz) Hills on the new Jive Records album.

Experts say a triumphant comeback is possible if Britney stays focused.

"We heard all this talk of a comeback last year, but she wasn't committed. She seemed committed to becoming a train wreck, not the beloved pop star," said Morris Reid of Washington image consultancy Westin Rinehart.

"We know this woman is talented. And who knows, maybe all the pain is both a curse and a gift," he said. "Difficult times are when some artists create their best work. She could use her music to express her feelings right now. And we all know people are interested in Britney's feelings

[Mel Gibson] believed his son Edward - who was in rehab last year for cocaine and alcohol addition - had turned his life around and could help Britney do the same, an insider told The Enquirer.

“Mel felt Ed would be a great influence on Brit, and if the relationship turned to romance, all the better,” said the insider.

So Gibson arranged a meeting between the pair at Britney’s home in the Hollywood Hills last March, said the source.

“He sincerely believed that his son could help Britney stay on the straight and narrow and that they might hit it off as a couple as well,” the insider explained.

But Britney, 26, gave the cold shoulder to Mel and Edward…

“She hid from them most of the night,” revealed the insider. “Mel and his son spent most of the evening talking to her bodyguards.”

There must have been no hard feelings between Britney and Mel after she tried to avoid the set up with one of his sons. She was seen at his Costa Rican getaway in mid-May. Britney also brought along a man with whom she’s been romantically linked in the past, agent Jason Trawick. Maybe Britney and Jason were already dating at that point and she wasn’t open to meeting Mel’s son or maybe she just wasn’t interested in the guy. Can you imagine thinking it’s a good idea to set up Britney Spears with a member of your family, though? At that point it had only been two months since she had that big melt down and was hospitalized.

In related news, OK! Magazine reports that Britney and Kevin had a “secret meeting” with their lawyers over the custody of their two boys. It is thought they are working to avoid having to go to trial to hash out custody issues. The talks were said to be unsuccessful, though, with neither of them willing to compromise. Britney went back home and then had a massage at the Ritz Carlton.

Britney reportedly attended the CineVegas Film Festival yesterday evening in Las Vegas. Interesting... Britney has had several meetings with George Maloof recently, dinners and vacations with actor and director Mel Gibson, as well as appearing on two episode of CBS' "How I Met Your Mother."

"Everyone was there, including the film critics and reporters, the filmmakers, and the CineVegas pass-holders," reports Cinematical.com. "Of course, she wasn't mingling with the hoi polloi. The pool area has several private-ish covered booths where VIPs chill, and Britney mostly stayed in one of them. It honestly looked like a zoo exhibit, with everyone standing around gawking at Britney Spears in a re-creation of her natural habitat... She was kept company by two guy friends, a girl friend, and plenty of Grey Goose, and she never really looked at the crowd." Those two guy friends were her security, and the "girl friend" was her assistant. As for the Grey Goose, count her out.

The reporter continues to say everyone began whipping out their cell phones to text message their friends about who had just arrived. Britney's security was none-too-pleased about this thinking they make snap a pic of the pop princess, and demanded that phones be put away. "I happened to be standing near her zoo exhibit when I texted someone, and one of the burly, black-clad bodyguards who stood between her and the crowd said, "You better put that away." His tone indicated that he knew I was only sending a text, but that I better not get any ideas about taking pictures. Goodness knows the last thing a reclusive, timid creature like Britney Spears wants is for someone to have a photographic depiction of her likeness, to join the 13,829,387,225,177,981 other pictures of her that already exist. I hadn't considered taking a picture anyway, but of course now that I knew someone didn't want me to, I wanted nothing more. But I didn't want to have my phone confiscated by an ogre, so I refrained. Soon enough, everyone forgot she was there and went back to their partying, like it was just a typical night at CineVegas. Which it kind of was."

It is believed that the couple are engaged in on-going guidance and business sessions (it was discovered that the pair have been meeting regularly back in March and last month, Britney flew down to Costa Rica to vacay with Mel on his estate) but it's very unclear as to what sorts of guidance (spiritual?) or business (a possible movie together?) items they discuss. Mel Gibson completely lost all my respect once his anti-Semetic views came to light after his DUI arrest in 2006 (at the time, I was unaware of his numerous homophobic remarks otherwise he would've lost my respect years ago) but I can appreciate that he is taking an active part in Britney's rehabilitation. While he is not someone I would want life coaching anyone I care about (or even remotely know), I'm glad that Britney Spears can, at least, get something positive from him. As I've said many times, she has been working very hard to get her life in order and I'm totally cool with her achieving that goal as best she can -- I just hope he isn't doing more harm than good ... and I'd love it if she'd kick that nasty and deadly smoking habit but, I'll take what I can get.

In May, Gibson and his wife, and Spears and her father, all vacationed together in Costa Rica.

Personally, I am not a fan of self-help books but I can absolutely understand how they may prove beneficial for some readers. If these are the sorts of books that have helped Britney regain control of her life in such a way that she is, once-again, productive and able to interact with her family, friends and children in a successful way then I am all for them! These sorts of photos are such a far cry from the tragic pics we were subjected to all last year. I absolutely love the image of Britney holding her children. I also love the image of Britney reading a book ... any book. With reports that Britney is in talks to stage a huge comeback concert in Las Vegas, it make sense that she would try to ground herself beforehand to ensure that she may be successful. She can do it ... she is deffo on the right path for making the comeback of the century.

While she dropped $4,000 in the women's store, she made sure to pick up goodies for sons Sean Preston and Jayden as well, spending another $900 at Lisa Kline Kids.

By the time Brit was ready to leave, a mob of more than 30 photographers had gathered outside, yelling her name.

"She walked out kind of expressionless," an observer tells E! News. "She is just used to all the photographers and their commotion."

Careful, Brit. If you start to mellow out and begin to take all the relentless attention for granted, it might very well go away.

From the looks of the photos that came out of Costa Rica this weekend, Britney really had herself a good ol' time with her family and friends. Not once did we see her with Mel Gibson (who hosted the Britney Bunch at his Cosat Rican compound) but I understand that he was available to "counsel" our dear Britney in between all the fun. I'm not a Mel Gibson fan -- by any means -- nor am I a fan of his beliefs but I can appreciate that he has reached out to help Britney get her life in order and can be commended on that front. As long as Britney continues to heal her life, I can be happy with how she goes about with that healing. I imagine Britney is anxious to spend time with her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, which might account for her return to LA. Welcome back, Britney ... we've missed you :)

Britney Spears' five-day Costa Rican getaway with actor Mel Gibson has ended.

On Tuesday, hollywoodtv.com posted footage of the singer, 26, arriving at California's Burbank Glendale Pasadena Airport.

Spears was all smiles during her trip, which she also took with father (and co-conservator) Jamie.

Gibson — Spears' former Malibu neighbor who has helped people with sobriety issues — hosted the Spears clan at his $25.8 million, 402-acre ranch on the Pacific coast since last week.

During the vacation, Spears went body surfing. On Saturday, she was photographed zipping around the beach on an ATV, snapping shots of her dad relaxing in a lounge chair.

She even strutted around in a bikini.
