Yesterday’s Leak Of Britney Spears’s New Single Was Unauthorized, Y’all

Yesterday morning we got to hear a short, low quality clip of Britney Spears’s new single Womanizer (which is due to be released to radio on September 22 and will be the lead single off her new album Circus, set for release on December 2) but we have since learned that the leak was totally unauthorized. Jive Records released a statement saying that the leaked clip was a “rough mix” of the song that was recorded over the telephone and then illegally leaked online by DJ Adam Sevalia of 107.5 The River. Sevalia was ordered to and has taken down the clip and now finds himself and/or his employer responsible to pay out of pocket damages to Jive Records for leaking the snippet:

Gossip blogs and celebrity Web sites lit up Friday (September 19) when a 37-second, static-filled snippet of the first single from Britney Spears’ upcoming album, Circus, was briefly posted on a radio station’s Web site before being removed. The snippet of disco-inflected track, called “Womanizer,” was briefly posted on the Web site of Nashville radio station 107.5-FM The River before being taken down, although at press time the clip could still be found elsewhere online. Based on the brief snippet, the Outsyders-produced song is a bouncy dance track with a sing-song chorus that frequently repeats the title; Britney coos about a possible lover who has a reputation of being a womanizer. According to Britney’s label, the station obtained the snippet by recording a phone call in which a radio rep played a rough mix of the song for people at the station — which seems likely, judging by the horrendous sound quality of the clip. At the label’s request, the station removed the clip from its Web site … Along with the Outsyders, collaborators on the album include Keri Hilson, Sean Garrett, Rodney Jerkins, Lil Jon, Nate “Danjahandz” Hills (who helmed “Gimme More”) and Dr. Luke (who wrote and produced the album’s title track), Guy Sigsworth, Bloodshy & Avant (who produced past hits “Toxic” and the big VMA winner “Piece of Me”) and Max Martin (who wrote “… Baby One More Time” and “Oops! … I Did It Again”).

According to sources, the DJ who did the leaking is now in hot water with both Jive Records and his radio station employer:

107.5 The River radio station presenter Adam Sevalia will have to open up his wallet to Britney. Well, Not literally. The presenter, who earlier today leaked 40 seconds of Britney Spears upcoming new single Womanizer, is suspended from the radio station for illegally playing the track during his show.According to reports, only KIIS and Z100 radio stations have the right to play the track on September 22nd., As for the other U.S. radio stations they’ll only be able to play the track on October 7th 2008. 107.5 The River radio station will have to pay a US$250,000 charge to JIVE Records for leaking the song.

Yikes! Well, this guy really wanted all the glory for being the first person to leak the track and he got more than he prolly bargained for. I’m glad to hear that the clip we heard was a rough mix cuz the quality really wasn’t all that great. We will all be able to hear the track in all its pristine glory on Monday when it debuts for reals on Z100 and KIIS FM.
